Indian Telecom Services sector experienced major jolt post Reliance Jio disruptive tariff plan. Reliance Jio offered free & unlimited services for first 3 months to ensure that users get attracted with them. The 16 mn user base post 1 month of official service launch is fabulous number and if it continues then they may reach 35 to 40 Mn users by Dec 2016 end. It means that Reliance Jio will have huge userbase when they start charging acquired users.
Even if, I consider that Reliance
Jio will be generating $5 ARPU then also they will be generating $2.4 Bn gross
revenue post investing around $25 Bn.
Post the new user channel check
on some of the PoS level by us, it is clear that most of the Reliance Jio user
got attracted due to free service offerings. The first query user asks is
nothing but about the free calling and data. It indicates the quality of user
acquisition which will be with Jio post expiry of free services offer period.
Most of Reliance Jio userbase
must be having more than one SIM and it will be interesting to watch the % of
user go for Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
It may inflict heavy losses as Jio
invested heavily to acquire userbase. Jio would love to see 100% VLR active
userbase post 31st Dec 2016.
It also proofs basic notion in
India that major marketing gimmick can be "free services".

acquired user post expiry of free service period.
